| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The comment in GetTransactionSnapshot() said that you "should call RegisterSnapshot or PushActiveSnapshot on the returned snap if it is to be used very long". That felt too unclear to me. Make the comment more strongly worded. To enforce that rule and to catch potential bugs where a snapshot might get invalidated while it's still in use, add an assertion to HeapTupleSatisfiesMVCC() to check that the snapshot is registered or pushed to active stack. No new bugs were found by this, but it seems like good future-proofing. It's not a great place for the check; HeapTupleSatisfiesMVCC() is in fact safe to call with an unregistered snapshot, and the assertion won't catch other unsafe uses. But it goes a long way in practice. Fix a few cases that were playing fast and loose with that and just assumed that the snapshot cannot be invalidated during a scan. Those assumptions were not wrong, but they're not performance critical, so let's drop the excuses and just register the snapshot. These were false positives found by the new assertion. It remained possible to lose one when a backend working toward a heap_update() copied a tuple into memory just before inplace update of that tuple. In catalogs eligible for inplace update, use LOCKTAG_TUPLE to govern admission to the steps of copying an old tuple, modifying it, and issuing heap_update(). This includes MERGE commands. To avoid changing most of the pg_class DDL, don't require LOCKTAG_TUPLE when holding a relation lock sufficient to exclude inplace updaters. Back-patch to v12 (all supported versions). In v13 and v12, "UPDATE pg_class" or "UPDATE pg_database" can still lose an inplace update. The v14+ UPDATE fix needs commit 86dc90056dfdbd9d1b891718d2e5614e3e432f35, and it wasn't worth reimplementing that fix without such infrastructure. Losing relhasindex=t was a source of index corruption. Inplace-updating commands like VACUUM will now wait for heap_update() commands like GRANT TABLE and GRANT DATABASE. That isn't ideal, but a long-running GRANT already hurts VACUUM progress more just by keeping an XID running. The VACUUM will behave like a DELETE or UPDATE waiting for the uncommitted change. For implementation details, start at the systable_inplace_update_begin() header comment and README.tuplock. Back-patch to v12 (all supported versions). In back branches, retain a deprecated heap_inplace_update(), for extensions. Reported by Smolkin Grigory. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit c66a7d75e652 modified DROP DATABASE so that if interrupted, the database is known to be in an invalid state and can only be dropped. This is done by setting a flag using an in-place update, so that it's not lost in case of rollback. For databases with many ACLs, this may however fail like this: ERROR: wrong tuple length This happens because with many ACLs, the pg_database.datacl attribute gets TOASTed. The dropdb() code reads the tuple from the syscache, which means it's detoasted. But the in-place update expects the tuple length to match the on-disk tuple. Fixed by reading the tuple from the catalog directly, not from syscache. Report and fix by Ayush Tiwari. Backpatch to 12. The DROP DATABASE fix was backpatched to 11, but 11 is EOL at this point. Furthermore, we can skip the checkpoints altogether because the problems they are intended to prevent don't apply to pg_upgrade. Instead, we just need to CHECKPOINT once in the new cluster after making any changes to template0 and before restoring the rest of the databases. This ensures that said template0 changes are written out to disk prior to creating the databases via FILE_COPY. Fixed by doing a case-insensitive comparison using pg_strcasecmp(), same as for other string parameters nearby. While at it, apply fmtId() to a nearby "locale_provider". This already did the comparison in case-insensitive way, but the value would not be double-quoted, confusing the parser and the error message. Backpatch to 15, where the strategy was introduced. Initially, the only locale supported by the builtin provider is "C", which is identical to the libc provider's "C" locale. The libc provider's "C" locale has always been treated as a special case that uses an internal implementation, without using libc at all -- so the new builtin provider uses the same implementation. The builtin provider's locale is independent of the server environment variables LC_COLLATE and LC_CTYPE. Using the builtin provider, the database collation locale can be "C" while LC_COLLATE and LC_CTYPE are set to "en_US", which is impossible with the libc provider. By offering a new builtin provider, it clarifies that the semantics of a collation using this provider will never depend on libc, and makes it easier to document the behavior. In some cases, a more specific #include replaces another less specific one. Some manual adjustments of the automatic result: - IWYU currently doesn't know about includes that provide global variable declarations (like -Wmissing-variable-declarations), so those includes are being kept manually. - All includes for port(ability) headers are being kept for now, to play it safe. - No changes of catalog/pg_foo.h to catalog/pg_foo_d.h, to keep the patch from exploding in size. Note that this patch touches just *.c files, so nothing declared in header files changes in hidden ways. As a small example, in src/backend/access/transam/rmgr.c, some IWYU pragma annotations are added to handle a special case there. Replace all usage of backend IDs with proc numbers. The only place where the term "backend id" remains is in a few pgstat functions that expose backend IDs at the SQL level. Those IDs are now in fact 0-based ProcNumbers too, but the documentation still calls them "backend ids". That term still seems appropriate to describe what the numbers are, so I let it be. One user-visible effect is that pg_temp_0 is now a valid temp schema name, for backend with ProcNumber 0. The symptom was absence of the database directory, PG_VERSION file, or pg_filenode.map. If missing the directory, recovery would fail. Either missing file would not fail recovery but would render the new database unusable. Fix CreateDirAndVersionFile() with the transam/README "action first and then write a WAL entry" strategy. That has a side benefit of moving filesystem mutations out of a critical section, reducing the ways to PANIC. Fix the write_relmap_file() call with a lock acquisition, so it interacts with checkpoints like non-CREATE DATABASE calls do. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since C99, there can be a trailing comma after the last value in an enum definition. A lot of new code has been introducing this style on the fly. Some new patches are now taking an inconsistent approach to this. Some add the last comma on the fly if they add a new last value, some are trying to preserve the existing style in each place, some are even dropping the last comma if there was one. We could nudge this all in a consistent direction if we just add the trailing commas everywhere once. I omitted a few places where there was a fixed "last" value that will always stay last. I also skipped the header files of libpq and ecpg, in case people want to use those with older compilers. There were also a small number of cases where the enum type wasn't used anywhere (but the enum values were), which ended up confusing pgindent a bit, so I left those alone. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Until now, when DROP DATABASE got interrupted in the wrong moment, the removal of the pg_database row would also roll back, even though some irreversible steps have already been taken. E.g. DropDatabaseBuffers() might have thrown out dirty buffers, or files could have been unlinked. But we continued to allow connections to such a corrupted database. To fix this, mark databases invalid with an in-place update, just before starting to perform irreversible steps. As we can't add a new column in the back branches, we use pg_database.datconnlimit = -2 for this purpose. An invalid database cannot be connected to anymore, but can still be dropped. Unfortunately we can't easily add output to psql's \l to indicate that some database is invalid, it doesn't fit in any of the existing columns. Add tests verifying that a interrupted DROP DATABASE is handled correctly in the backend and in various tools. We've also updated to perltidy version 20230309 and changed some of its settings, which reduces its desire to add whitespace to lines to make assignments etc. line up. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Convert to BCP47 language tags before storing in the catalog, except during binary upgrade or when the locale comes from an existing collation or template database. The resulting language tags can vary slightly between ICU versions. For instance, "@colBackwards=yes" is converted to "und-u-kb-true" in older versions of ICU, and to the simpler (but equivalent) "und-u-kb" in newer versions. The process of canonicalizing to a language tag also understands more input locale string formats than ucol_open(). For instance, "fr_CA.UTF-8" is misinterpreted by ucol_open() and the region is ignored; effectively treating it the same as the locale "fr" and opening the wrong collator. Canonicalization properly interprets the language and region, resulting in the language tag "fr-CA", which can then be understood by ucol_open(). This commit fixes a problem in prior versions due to ucol_open() misinterpreting locale strings as described above. For instance, creating an ICU collation with locale "fr_CA.UTF-8" would store that string directly in the catalog, which would later be passed to (and misinterpreted by) ucol_open(). After this commit, the locale string will be canonicalized to language tag "fr-CA" in the catalog, which will be properly understood by ucol_open(). Because this fix affects the resulting collator, we cannot change the locale string stored in the catalog for existing databases or collations; otherwise we'd risk corrupting indexes. Therefore, only canonicalize locales for newly-created (not upgraded) collations/databases. For similar reasons, do not backport. However, as coded in 9c08aea, this copy strategy would load the pages of pg_class without considering it as a permanent relation, causing the loaded pages to never be flushed when they should. Any modification of the template's pg_class, mostly through DDLs, would then be missed, causing corruptions. STRATEGY = WAL_LOG is the default over FILE_COPY since it has been introduced, so any changes done to pg_class on a database template would be gone. Updates of database templates should be a rare thing, so the impact of this bug should be hopefully limited. The pre-14 default strategy FILE_COPY is safe, and can be used as a workaround. Ryo Matsumura has found and analyzed the issue, and Nathan has written a test able to reproduce the failure (with few tweaks from me). OWNER. We could alternatively have made this controlled by the INHERIT option, or allow it when either option is given. An advantage of this approach is that if you are granted a predefined role with INHERIT TRUE, SET FALSE, you can't go and create objects owned by that role. The underlying theory here is that the ability to create objects as a target role is not a privilege per se, and thus does not depend on whether you inherit the target role's privileges. However, it's surely something you could do anyway if you could SET ROLE to the target role, and thus making it contingent on whether you have that ability is reasonable.
