* Split up guc.c for better build speed and ease of maintenance.Tom Lane2022-09-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | guc.c has grown to be one of our largest .c files, making it a bottleneck for compilation. It's also acquired a bunch of knowledge that'd be better kept elsewhere, because of our not very good habit of putting variable-specific check hooks here. Hence, split it up along these lines: * guc.c itself retains just the core GUC housekeeping mechanisms. * New file guc_funcs.c contains the SET/SHOW interfaces and some SQL-accessible functions for GUC manipulation. * New file guc_tables.c contains the data arrays that define the built-in GUC variables, along with some already-exported constant tables. * GUC check/assign/show hook functions are moved to the variable's home module, whenever that's clearly identifiable. A few hard- to-classify hooks ended up in commands/variable.c, which was already a home for miscellaneous GUC hook functions. To avoid cluttering a lot more header files with #include "guc.h", I also invented a new header file utils/guc_hooks.h and put all the GUC hook functions' declarations there, regardless of their originating module. That allowed removal of #include "guc.h" from some existing headers. The fallout from that (hopefully all caught here) demonstrates clearly why such inclusions are best minimized: there are a lot of files that, for example, were getting array.h at two or more levels of remove, despite not having any connection at all to GUCs in themselves. There is some very minor code beautification here, such as renaming a couple of inconsistently-named hook functions and improving some comments. But mostly this just moves code from point A to point B and deals with the ensuing needs for #include adjustments and exporting a few functions that previously weren't exported. Patch by me, per a suggestion from Andres Freund; thanks also to Michael Paquier for the idea to invent guc_funcs.c. Discussion: https://postgr.es/m/587607.1662836699@sss.pgh.pa.us

* Turn transaction_isolation into GUC enumPeter Eisentraut2018-10-09
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It was previously a string setting that was converted into an enum by custom code, but using the GUC enum facility seems much simpler and doesn't change any functionality, except that set transaction_isolation='default'; no longer works, but that was never documented and doesn't work with any other transaction characteristics. (Note that this is not the same as RESET or SET TO DEFAULT, which still work.) * Phase 2 of pgindent updates.Tom Lane2017-06-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change pg_bsd_indent to follow upstream rules for placement of comments to the right of code, and remove pgindent hack that caused comments following #endif to not obey the general rule. Commit e3860ffa4dd0dad0dd9eea4be9cc1412373a8c89 wasn't actually using the published version of pg_bsd_indent, but a hacked-up version that tried to minimize the amount of movement of comments to the right of code. The situation of interest is where such a comment has to be moved to the right of its default placement at column 33 because there's code there. BSD indent has always moved right in units of tab stops in such cases --- but in the previous incarnation, indent was working in 8-space tab stops, while now it knows we use 4-space tabs. So the net result is that in about half the cases, such comments are placed one tab stop left of before. This is better all around: it leaves more room on the line for comment text, and it means that in such cases the comment uniformly starts at the next 4-space tab stop after the code, rather than sometimes one and sometimes two tabs after. Also, ensure that comments following #endif are indented the same as comments following other preprocessor commands such as #else. That inconsistency turns out to have been self-inflicted damage from a poorly-thought-through post-indent "fixup" in pgindent. This patch is much less interesting than the first round of indent changes, but also bulkier, so I thought it best to separate the effects. * Revise the API for GUC variable assign hooks.Tom Lane2011-04-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The previous functions of assign hooks are now split between check hooks and assign hooks, where the former can fail but the latter shouldn't. Aside from being conceptually clearer, this approach exposes the "canonicalized" form of the variable value to guc.c without having to do an actual assignment. And that lets us fix the problem recently noted by Bernd Helmle that the auto-tune patch for wal_buffers resulted in bogus log messages about "parameter "wal_buffers" cannot be changed without restarting the server". There may be some speed advantage too, because this design lets hook functions avoid re-parsing variable values when restoring a previous state after a rollback (they can store a pre-parsed representation of the value instead). This patch also resolves a longstanding annoyance about custom error messages from variable assign hooks: they should modify, not appear separately from, guc.c's own message about "invalid parameter value".
* Implement genuine serializable isolation level.Heikki Linnakangas2011-02-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Until now, our Serializable mode has in fact been what's called Snapshot Isolation, which allows some anomalies that could not occur in any serialized ordering of the transactions. This patch fixes that using a method called Serializable Snapshot Isolation, based on research papers by Michael J. Cahill (see README-SSI for full references). In Serializable Snapshot Isolation, transactions run like they do in Snapshot Isolation, but a predicate lock manager observes the reads and writes performed and aborts transactions if it detects that an anomaly might occur. This method produces some false positives, ie. it sometimes aborts transactions even though there is no anomaly. To track reads we implement predicate locking, see storage/lmgr/predicate.c. Whenever a tuple is read, a predicate lock is acquired on the tuple. Shared memory is finite, so when a transaction takes many tuple-level locks on a page, the locks are promoted to a single page-level lock, and further to a single relation level lock if necessary. To lock key values with no matching tuple, a sequential scan always takes a relation-level lock, and an index scan acquires a page-level lock that covers the search key, whether or not there are any matching keys at the moment. A predicate lock doesn't conflict with any regular locks or with another predicate locks in the normal sense. They're only used by the predicate lock manager to detect the danger of anomalies. Only serializable transactions participate in predicate locking, so there should be no extra overhead for for other transactions. Predicate locks can't be released at commit, but must be remembered until all the transactions that overlapped with it have completed. That means that we need to remember an unbounded amount of predicate locks, so we apply a lossy but conservative method of tracking locks for committed transactions. If we run short of shared memory, we overflow to a new "pg_serial" SLRU pool. We don't currently allow Serializable transactions in Hot Standby mode. That would be hard, because even read-only transactions can cause anomalies that wouldn't otherwise occur. Serializable isolation mode now means the new fully serializable level. Repeatable Read gives you the old Snapshot Isolation level that we have always had. Kevin Grittner and Dan Ports, reviewed by Jeff Davis, Heikki Linnakangas and Anssi Kääriäinen
* Code cleanup for assign_transaction_read_only.Robert Haas2011-01-22
| | | | | | | | | | | As in commit fb4c5d2798730f60b102d775f22fb53c26a6445d on 2011-01-21, this avoids spurious debug messages and allows idempotent changes at any time. Along the way, make assign_XactIsoLevel allow idempotent changes even when not within a subtransaction, to be consistent with the new coding of assign_transaction_read_only and because there's no compelling reason to do otherwise. Kevin Grittner, with some adjustments.

This avoids Windows-specific problems with localized time zone names that are in the wrong encoding, and generally seems like a good idea to forestall other potential platform-dependent issues. To preserve the existing behavior that all backends will log in the same time zone, create a new GUC variable log_timezone that can only be changed on a system-wide basis, and reference log-related calculations to that zone instead of the TimeZone variable. This fixes the issue reported by Hiroshi Saito that timestamps printed by xlog.c startup could be improperly localized on Windows. We still need a simpler patch for that problem in the back branches, however.

* Repair problem identified by Olivier Prenant: ALTER DATABASE SET search_pathTom Lane2004-01-19
| | | | | | | | | | | should not be too eager to reject paths involving unknown schemas, since it can't really tell whether the schemas exist in the target database. (Also, when reading pg_dumpall output, it could be that the schemas don't exist yet, but eventually will.) ALTER USER SET has a similar issue. So, reduce the normal ERROR to a NOTICE when checking search_path values for these commands. Supporting this requires changing the API for GUC assign_hook functions, which causes the patch to touch a lot of places, but the changes are conceptually trivial.

This gets rid of the need for an initial 'select pg_client_encoding()' query in libpq, bringing us back to one message transmitted in each direction for a standard connection startup. To allow server version to be sent using the same GUC mechanism that handles other parameters, invent the concept of a never-settable GUC parameter: you can 'show server_version' but it's not settable by any GUC input source. Create 'lc_collate' and 'lc_ctype' never-settable parameters so that people can find out these settings without need for pg_controldata. (These side ideas were all discussed some time ago in pgsql-hackers, but not yet implemented.)

* Accept an INTERVAL argument for SET TIME ZONE per SQL99.Thomas G. Lockhart2001-10-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Modified the parser and the SET handlers to use full Node structures rather than simply a character string argument. Implement INTERVAL() YEAR TO MONTH (etc) syntax per SQL99. Does not yet accept the goofy string format that goes along with, but this should be fairly straight forward to fix now as a bug or later as a feature. Implement precision for the INTERVAL() type. Use the typmod mechanism for both of INTERVAL features. Fix the INTERVAL syntax in the parser: opt_interval was in the wrong place. INTERVAL is now a reserved word, otherwise we get reduce/reduce errors. Implement an explicit date_part() function for TIMETZ. Should fix coersion problem with INTERVAL reported by Peter E. Fix up some error messages for date/time types. Use all caps for type names within message. Fix recently introduced side-effect bug disabling 'epoch' as a recognized field for date_part() etc. Reported by Peter E. (??) Bump catalog version number. Rename "microseconds" current transaction time field from ...Msec to ...Usec. Duh! date/time regression tests updated for reference platform, but a few changes will be necessary for others.

Removed permissions check on SHOW command. Add examine_subclass to the game, rename to SQL_inheritance to fit the official data model better. Adjust documentation. Standalone backend needs to reset all options before it starts. To facilitate that, have IsUnderPostmaster be set by the postmaster itself, don't wait for the magic -p switch. Also make sure that all environment variables and argv's survive init_ps_display(). Use strdup where necessary. Have initdb make configuration files (postgresql.conf, pg_hba.conf) mode 0600 -- having configuration files is no fun if you can't edit them.
