Due to concerns raised about the approach, and memory leaks found
in sensitive contexts the functionality is reverted. This reverts

This adds a function for retrieving memory context statistics
and information from backends as well as auxiliary processes.
The intended usecase is cluster debugging when under memory
pressure or unanticipated memory usage characteristics.
When calling the function it sends a signal to the specified
process to submit statistics regarding its memory contexts
into dynamic shared memory. Each memory context is returned
in detail, followed by a cumulative total in case the number
of contexts exceed the max allocated amount of shared memory.
Each process is limited to use at most 1Mb memory for this.
A summary can also be explicitly requested by the user, this
will return the TopMemoryContext and a cumulative total of
all lower contexts.
In order to not block on busy processes the caller specifies
the number of seconds during which to retry before timing out.
In the case where no statistics are published within the set
timeout, the last known statistics are returned, or NULL if
no previously published statistics exist. This allows dash-
board type queries to continually publish even if the target
process is temporarily congested. Context records contain a
timestamp to indicate when they were submitted.

This commit just does the minimal wiring up of the AIO subsystem, added in the
next commit, to the rest of the system. The next commit contains more details
about motivation and architecture.
This commit is kept separate to make it easier to review, separating the
changes across the tree, from the implementation of the new subsystem.
We discussed squashing this commit with the main commit before merging AIO,
but there has been a mild preference for keeping it separate.

The usual pattern for handling a signal is that the signal handler
sets a flag and calls SetLatch(MyLatch), and CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() or
other code that is part of a wait loop calls another function to deal
with it. The naming of the functions involved was a bit inconsistent,
however. CHECK_FOR_INTERRUPTS() calls ProcessInterrupts() to do the
heavy-lifting, but the analogous functions in aux processes were
called HandleMainLoopInterrupts(), HandleStartupProcInterrupts(),
etc. Similarly, most subroutines of ProcessInterrupts() were called
Process*(), but some were called Handle*().
To make things less confusing, rename all the functions that are part
of the overall signal/interrupt handling system but are not executed
in a signal handler to e.g. ProcessSomething(), rather than
HandleSomething(). The "Process" prefix is now consistently used in
the non-signal-handler functions, and the "Handle" prefix in functions
that are part of signal handlers, except for some completely unrelated
functions that clearly have nothing to do with signal or interrupt
handling.

The main motivation for this change is to have a process that can serialize
stats after all other processes have terminated. Serializing stats already
happens in checkpointer, even though walsenders can be active longer.
The only reason the current shutdown sequence does not actively cause problems
is that walsender currently does not generate any stats. However, there is an
upcoming patch changing that.
Another need for this change originates in the AIO patchset, where IO
workers (which, in some edge cases, can emit stats of their own) need to run
while the shutdown checkpoint is being written.
This commit changes the shutdown sequence so checkpointer is signalled (via
SIGINT) to trigger writing the shutdown checkpoint without also causing
checkpointer to exit. Once checkpointer wrote the shutdown checkpoint it
notifies postmaster via PMSIGNAL_XLOG_IS_SHUTDOWN and waits for the
termination signal (SIGUSR2, as before). Checkpointer now is terminated after
all children, other than dead-end children and logger, have been terminated,
tracked using the new PM_WAIT_CHECKPOINTER PMState.

The motivation for this change is that a future commit will use SIGINT for
another purpose (postmaster requesting WAL access to be shut down) and that
there no other signals that we could readily use (see code comment for the
reason why SIGTERM shouldn't be used). But it's also a tad nicer / more
efficient to use SetLatch(), as it avoids sending signals when checkpointer
already is busy.

Checkpoints can be skipped when the server is idle. The existing num_timed and
num_requested counters in pg_stat_checkpointer track both completed and
skipped checkpoints, but there was no way to count only the completed ones.
This commit introduces the num_done counter, which tracks only completed
checkpoints, making it easier to see how many were actually performed.
Bump catalog version.

section. Deleting the SLRU segments calls ForwardSyncRequest(), which
will try to compact the request queue if it's full

To fix, bail out in CompactCheckpointerRequestQueue() without doing
anything, if it's called in a critical section. That covers the above
call path, as well as any other similar cases where
RegisterSyncRequest might be called in a critical section.
2. After fixing that, another problem became apparent: Autovacuum
process doing that truncation can deadlock with the checkpointer
process. TruncateMultiXact() sets "MyProc->delayChkptFlags |=
DELAY_CHKPT_START". If the sync request queue is full and cannot be
compacted, the process will repeatedly sleep and retry, until there is
room in the queue. However, if the checkpointer is trying to start a
checkpoint at the same time, and is waiting for the DELAY_CHKPT_START
processes to finish, the queue will never shrink.

To fix, add AbsorbSyncRequests() to the loops where the checkpointer
waits for DELAY_CHKPT_START or DELAY_CHKPT_COMPLETE operations to
finish.
Backpatch to v14. Before that, SLRU deletion didn't call
RegisterSyncRequest, which avoided this failure. I'm not sure if there
are other similar scenarios on older versions, but we haven't had
any such reports.

After further review, we want to move in the direction of always
quoting GUC names in error messages, rather than the previous (PG16)
wildly mixed practice or the intermittent (mid-PG17) idea of doing
this depending on how possibly confusing the GUC name is.
This commit applies appropriate quotes to (almost?) all mentions of
GUC names in error messages. It partially supersedes a243569bf65 and
8d9978a7176, which had moved things a bit in the opposite direction
but which then were abandoned in a partial state.

Introduce new postmaster_child_launch() function that deals with the
differences in EXEC_BACKEND mode.
Refactor the mechanism of passing information from the parent to child
process. Instead of using different command-line arguments when
launching the child process in EXEC_BACKEND mode, pass a
variable-length blob of startup data along with all the global
variables. The contents of that blob depend on the kind of child
process being launched. In !EXEC_BACKEND mode, we use the same blob,
but it's simply inherited from the parent to child process.

Presently, we rely on each individual signal handler to save the
initial value of errno and then restore it before returning if
needed. This is easily forgotten and, if missed, often goes
undetected for a long time.
In commit 3b00fdba9f, we introduced a wrapper signal handler
function that checks whether MyProcPid matches getpid(). This
commit moves the aforementioned errno restoration code from the
individual signal handlers to the new wrapper handler so that we no
longer need to worry about missing it.

After calling smgropen(), it was not clear how long you could continue
to use the result, because various code paths including cache
invalidation could call smgrclose(), which freed the memory.
Guarantee that the object won't be destroyed until the end of the
current transaction, or in recovery, the commit/abort record that
destroys the underlying storage.
smgrclose() is now just an alias for smgrrelease(). It closes files
and forgets all state except the rlocator, but keeps the SMgrRelation
object valid.
A new smgrdestroy() function is used by rare places that know there
should be no other references to the SMgrRelation.
The short version:
* smgrclose() is now just an alias for smgrrelease(). It releases
resources, but doesn't destroy until EOX
* smgrdestroy() now frees memory, and should rarely be used.
Existing code should be unaffected, but it is now possible for code that
has an SMgrRelation object to use it repeatedly during a transaction as
long as the storage hasn't been physically dropped. Such code would
normally hold a lock on the relation.
This also replaces the "ownership" mechanism of SMgrRelations with a
pin counter. An SMgrRelation can now be "pinned", which prevents it
from being destroyed at end of transaction. There can be multiple pins
on the same SMgrRelation. In practice, the pin mechanism is only used
by the relcache, so there cannot be more than one pin on the same
SMgrRelation. Except with swap_relation_files XXX

Before the advent of PROCSIGNAL_BARRIER_SMGRRELEASE, we didn't have a
comprehensive way to deal with Windows file handles that get in the way
of unlinking directories. We had smgrcloseall() calls in a few places
to try to mitigate.
It's still a good idea for bgwriter and checkpointer to do that once per
checkpoint so they don't accumulate unbounded SMgrRelation objects, but
there is no longer any reason to close them at other random places such
as the error path, and the explanation as given in the comments is now
obsolete.

Bhis commit introduces enhancements to the pg_stat_checkpointer view by adding
three new columns: restartpoints_timed, restartpoints_req, and
restartpoints_done. These additions aim to improve the visibility and
monitoring of restartpoint processes on replicas.
Previously, it was challenging to differentiate between successful and failed
restartpoint requests. This limitation arises because restartpoints on replicas
are dependent on checkpoint records from the primary, and cannot occur more
frequently than these checkpoints.
The new columns allow for clear distinction and tracking of restartpoint
requests, their triggers, and successful completions. This enhancement aids
database administrators and developers in better understanding and diagnosing
issues related to restartpoint behavior, particularly in scenarios where
restartpoint requests may fail.
System catalog is changed. Catversion is bumped.

Quotes are applied to GUCs in a very inconsistent way across the code
base, with a mix of double quotes or no quotes used. This commit
removes double quotes around all the GUC names that are obviously
referred to as parameters with non-English words (use of underscore,
mixed case, etc).
This is the result of a discussion with Álvaro Herrera, Nathan Bossart,
Laurenz Albe, Peter Eisentraut, Tom Lane and Daniel Gustafsson.

As of commit eaa5808e8e, MemoryContextResetAndDeleteChildren() is
just a backwards compatibility macro for MemoryContextReset(). Now
that some time has passed, this macro seems more likely to create
confusion.
This commit removes the macro and replaces all remaining uses with
calls to MemoryContextReset(). Any third-party code that use this
macro will need to be adjusted to call MemoryContextReset()
instead. Since the two have behaved the same way since v9.5, such
adjustments won't produce any behavior changes for all
currently-supported versions of PostgreSQL.

Historically, the statistics of the checkpointer have been always part
of pg_stat_bgwriter. This commit removes a few columns from
pg_stat_bgwriter, and introduces pg_stat_checkpointer with equivalent,
renamed columns (plus a new one for the reset timestamp):
- checkpoints_timed -> num_timed
- checkpoints_req -> num_requested
- checkpoint_write_time -> write_time
- checkpoint_sync_time -> sync_time
- buffers_checkpoint -> buffers_written
The fields of PgStat_CheckpointerStats and its SQL functions are renamed
to match with the new field names, for consistency. Note that
background writer and checkpointer have been split into two different
processes in commits 806a2aee3791 and bf405ba8e460. The pgstat
structures were already split, making this change straight-forward.
Bump catalog version.

Two attributes related to checkpointer statistics are removed in this
commit:
- buffers_backend, that counts the number of buffers written directly by
a backend.
- buffers_backend_fsync, that counts the number of times a backend had
to do fsync() by its own.
These are actually not checkpointer properties but backend properties.
Also, pg_stat_io provides a more accurate and equivalent report of these
numbers, by tracking all the I/O stats related to backends, including
writes and fsyncs, so storing them in pg_stat_checkpointer was
redundant.

once. To be concurrency safe, the buffers for those blocks need to be marked
as BM_IO_IN_PROGRESS. Until now we only had infrastructure for recovering from
an IO error for a single buffer. This commit extends that infrastructure to
multiple buffers by using the resource owner infrastructure.
This commit increases the size of the ResourceOwnerData struct, which appears
to have a just about measurable overhead in very extreme workloads. Medium
term we are planning to substantially shrink the size of
ResourceOwnerData. Short term the increase is small enough to not worry about
it for now.

In the 90s we needed to deal with computers that still had the
pre-standard signal masking APIs. That hasn't been relevant for a very
long time on Unix systems, and c94ae9d8 got rid of a remaining
dependency in our Windows porting code. PG_SETMASK didn't expose
save/restore functionality, so we'd already started using sigprocmask()
directly in places, creating the visual distraction of having two ways
to spell it. It's not part of the API that extensions are expected to
be using (but if they are, the change will be trivial). It seems like a
good time to drop the old macro and just call the standard POSIX
function.

We have been using the term RelFileNode to refer to either (1) the
integer that is used to name the sequence of files for a certain relation
within the directory set aside for that tablespace/database combination;
or (2) that value plus the OIDs of the tablespace and database; or
occasionally (3) the whole series of files created for a relation
based on those values. Using the same name for more than one thing is
confusing.
Replace RelFileNode with RelFileNumber when we're talking about just the
single number, i.e. (1) from above, and with RelFileLocator when we're
talking about all the things that are needed to locate a relation's files
on disk, i.e. (2) from above. In the places where we refer to (3) as
a relfilenode, instead refer to "relation storage".
Since there is a ton of SQL code in the world that knows about
pg_class.relfilenode, don't change the name of that column, or of other
SQL-facing things that derive their name from it.
On the other hand, do adjust closely-related internal terminology. For
example, the structure member names dbNode and spcNode appear to be
derived from the fact that the structure itself was called RelFileNode,
so change those to dbOid and spcOid. Likewise, various variables with
names like rnode and relnode get renamed appropriately, according to
how they're being used in context.
Hopefully, this is clearer than before. It is also preparation for
future patches that intend to widen the relfilenumber fields from its
current width of 32 bits. Variables that store a relfilenumber are now
declared as type RelFileNumber rather than type Oid; right now, these
are the same, but that can now more easily be changed.

Previously the statistics collector received statistics updates via UDP and
shared statistics data by writing them out to temporary files regularly. These
files can reach tens of megabytes and are written out up to twice a
second. This has repeatedly prevented us from adding additional useful
statistics.
Now statistics are stored in shared memory. Statistics for variable-numbered
objects are stored in a dshash hashtable (backed by dynamic shared
memory). Fixed-numbered stats are stored in plain shared memory.
The header for pgstat.c contains an overview of the architecture.
The stats collector is not needed anymore, remove it.
By utilizing the transactional statistics drop infrastructure introduced in a
prior commit statistics entries cannot "leak" anymore. Previously leaked
statistics were dropped by pgstat_vacuum_stat(), called from [auto-]vacuum. On
systems with many small relations pgstat_vacuum_stat() could be quite
expensive.
Now that replicas drop statistics entries for dropped objects, it is not
necessary anymore to reset stats when starting from a cleanly shut down
replica.
Subsequent commits will perform some further code cleanup, adapt docs and add
tests.
Bumps PGSTAT_FILE_FORMAT_ID.

Soon the stats collector will be no more, with statistics instead getting
stored in shared memory. There are a lot of references to the stats collector
in comments. This commit replaces most of these references with "cumulative
statistics system", with the remaining ones getting replaced as part of
subsequent commits.
This is done separately from the - quite large - shared memory statistics
patch to make review easier.

The checkpointer shouldn't ignore its latch. Other backends may be
waiting for it to drain the request queue. Hopefully real systems don't
have a full queue often, but the condition is reached easily when
shared_buffers is small.
This involves defining a new wait event, which will appear in the
pg_stat_activity view often due to spread checkpoints.
Back-patch only to 14. Even though the problem exists in earlier
branches too, it's hard to hit there. In 14 we stopped using signal
handlers for latches on Linux, *BSD and macOS, which were previously
hiding this problem by interrupting the sleep (though not reliably, as
the signal could arrive before the sleep begins; precisely the problem
latches address).

This moves the functions related to performing WAL recovery into the new
xlogrecovery.c source file, leaving xlog.c responsible for maintaining
the WAL buffers, coordinating the startup and switch from recovery to
normal operations, and other miscellaneous stuff that have always been in
xlog.c.

Previously pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() could request to
log the memory contexts of backends, but not of auxiliary processes
such as checkpointer. This commit enhances the function so that
it can also send the request to auxiliary processes. It's useful to
look at the memory contexts of those processes for debugging purpose
and better understanding of the memory usage pattern of them.
Note that pg_log_backend_memory_contexts() cannot send the request
to logger or statistics collector. Because this logging request
mechanism is based on shared memory but those processes aren't
connected to that.

These have been unrelated since bgwriter and checkpointer were split into two
processes in 806a2aee379. As there several pending patches (shared memory
stats, extending the set of tracked IO / buffer statistics) that are made a
bit more awkward by the grouping, split them. Done separately to make
reviewing easier.
This does *not* change the contents of pg_stat_bgwriter or move fields out of
bgwriter/checkpointer stats that arguably do not belong in either. However
pgstat_fetch_global() was renamed and split into
pgstat_fetch_stat_checkpointer() and pgstat_fetch_stat_bgwriter().

Start up the checkpointer and bgwriter during crash recovery (except in
--single mode), as we do for replication. This wasn't done back in
commit cdd46c76 out of caution. Now it seems like a better idea to make
the environment as similar as possible in both cases. There may also be
some performance advantages.

1) Previously there were both pgstat_send_wal() and pgstat_report_wal()
in order to send WAL activity to the stats collector. With the former being
used by wal writer, the latter by most other processes. They were a bit
redundant and so this commit merges them into pgstat_send_wal() to
simplify the code.
2) Previously WAL global statistics counters were calculated and then
compared with zero-filled buffer in order to determine whether any WAL
activity has happened since the last submission. These calculation and
comparison were not cheap. This was regularly exercised even in read-only
workloads. This commit fixes the issue by making some WAL activity
counters directly be checked to determine if there's WAL activity stats
to send.
3) Previously pgstat_report_stat() did not check if there's WAL activity
stats to send as part of the "Don't expend a clock check if nothing to do"
check at the top. It's probably rare to have pending WAL stats without
also passing one of the other conditions, but for safely this commit
changes pgstat_report_stats() so that it checks also some WAL activity
counters at the top.
This commit also adds the comments about the design of WAL stats.

of launcher.c's struct LogicalRepWorkerId, which led me to notice that
that struct wasn't used at all anymore, so I just took it out.

Common recommendations are that the checkpoint should be spread out as
much as possible, provided we avoid having it take too long. This
change updates the default to 0.9 (from 0.5) to match that
recommendation.
There was some debate about possibly removing the option entirely but it
seems there may be some corner-cases where having it set much lower to
try to force the checkpoint to be as fast as possible could result in
fewer periods of time of reduced performance due to kernel flushing.
General agreement is that the "spread more" is the preferred approach
though and those who need to tune away from that value are much less
common.

When shutdown is requested, checkpointer performs checkpoint or
restartpoint, and updates the statistics, before it exits. But previously
checkpointer didn't send those statistics to the stats collector.
Shutdown checkpoint and restartpoint are treated as requested ones
instead of scheduled ones, so the number of them are counted in
pg_stat_bgwriter.checkpoints_req column.

This commit adds new GUC track_wal_io_timing. When this is enabled,
the total amounts of time XLogWrite writes and issue_xlog_fsync syncs
WAL data to disk are counted in pg_stat_wal. This information would be
useful to check how much WAL write and sync affect the performance.
Enabling track_wal_io_timing will make the server query the operating
system for the current time every time WAL is written or synced,
which may cause significant overhead on some platforms. To avoid such
additional overhead in the server with track_io_timing enabled,
this commit introduces track_wal_io_timing as a separate parameter from
track_io_timing.
Note that WAL write and sync activity by walreceiver has not been tracked yet.
This commit makes the server also track the numbers of times XLogWrite
writes and issue_xlog_fsync syncs WAL data to disk, in pg_stat_wal,
regardless of the setting of track_wal_io_timing. This counters can be
used to calculate the WAL write and sync time per request, for example.
Bump PGSTAT_FILE_FORMAT_ID.
Bump catalog version.

Invent a new flag bit HASH_STRINGS to specify C-string hashing, which
was formerly the default; and add assertions insisting that exactly
one of the bits HASH_STRINGS, HASH_BLOBS, and HASH_FUNCTION be set.
This is in hopes of preventing recurrences of the type of oversight
fixed in commit a1b8aa1e4 (i.e., mistakenly omitting HASH_BLOBS).
Also, when HASH_STRINGS is specified, insist that the keysize be
more than 8 bytes. This is a heuristic, but it should catch
accidental use of HASH_STRINGS for integer or pointer keys.
(Nearly all existing use-cases set the keysize to NAMEDATALEN or
more, so there's little reason to think this restriction should
be problematic.)
Tweak hash_create() to insist that the HASH_ELEM flag be set, and
remove the defaults it had for keysize and entrysize. Since those
defaults were undocumented and basically useless, no callers
omitted HASH_ELEM anyway.
Also, remove memset's zeroing the HASHCTL parameter struct from
those callers that had one. This has never been really necessary,
and while it wasn't a bad coding convention it was confusing that
some callers did it and some did not. We might as well save a few
cycles by standardizing on "not".
Also improve the documentation for hash_create().
In passing, improve reinit.c's usage of a hash table by storing
the key as a binary Oid rather than a string; and, since that's
a temporary hash table, allocate it in CurrentMemoryContext for
neatness.

This view shows the statistics about WAL activity. Currently it has only
two columns: wal_buffers_full and stats_reset. wal_buffers_full column
indicates the number of times WAL data was written to the disk because
WAL buffers got full. This information is useful when tuning wal_buffers.
stats_reset column indicates the time at which these statistics were
last reset.
pg_stat_wal view is also the basic infrastructure to expose other
various statistics about WAL activity later.
Bump PGSTAT_FILE_FORMAT_ID due to the change in pgstat format.
Bump catalog version.

We decided that the policy established in commit 7634bd4f6 for
the bgwriter, checkpointer, walwriter, and walreceiver processes,
namely that they should accept SIGQUIT at all times, really ought
to apply uniformly to all postmaster children. Therefore, get
rid of the duplicative and inconsistent per-process code for
establishing that signal handler and removing SIGQUIT from BlockSig.
Instead, make InitPostmasterChild do it.
The handler set up by InitPostmasterChild is SignalHandlerForCrashExit,
which just summarily does _exit(2). In interactive backends, we
almost immediately replace that with quickdie, since we would prefer
to try to tell the client that we're dying. However, this patch is
changing the behavior of autovacuum (both launcher and workers), as
well as walsenders. Those processes formerly also used quickdie,
but AFAICS that was just mindless copy-and-paste: they don't have
any interactive client that's likely to benefit from being told this.
The stats collector continues to be an outlier, in that it thinks
SIGQUIT means normal exit. That should probably be changed for
consistency, but there's another patch set where that's being
dealt with, so I didn't do so here.

The bgwriter, checkpointer, walwriter, and walreceiver processes
claimed to allow SIGQUIT "at all times". In reality SIGQUIT
would get re-blocked during error recovery, because we didn't
update the actual signal mask immediately, so sigsetjmp() would
save and reinstate a mask that includes SIGQUIT.
This appears to be simply a coding oversight. There's never a
good reason to hold off SIGQUIT in these processes, because it's
going to just call _exit(2) which should be safe enough, especially
since the postmaster is going to tear down shared memory afterwards.
Hence, stick in PG_SETMASK() calls to install the modified BlockSig
mask immediately.
Also try to improve the comments around sigsetjmp blocks. Most of
them were just referencing postgres.c, which is misleading because
actually postgres.c manages the signals differently.
No back-patch, since there's no evidence that this is causing any
problems in the field.

Notably, it seems some people didn't absorb the style rules of
