* Make OIDs optional, per discussions in pghackers. WITH OIDS is still theTom Lane2001-08-10
| | | | | | | | | | | | default, but OIDS are removed from many system catalogs that don't need them. Some interesting side effects: TOAST pointers are 20 bytes not 32 now; pg_description has a three-column key instead of one. Bugs fixed in passing: BINARY cursors work again; pg_class.relhaspkey has some usefulness; pg_dump dumps comments on indexes, rules, and triggers in a valid order. initdb forced.
* Rewrite of planner statistics-gathering code. ANALYZE is now available asTom Lane2001-05-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | a separate statement (though it can still be invoked as part of VACUUM, too). pg_statistic redesigned to be more flexible about what statistics are stored. ANALYZE now collects a list of several of the most common values, not just one, plus a histogram (not just the min and max values). Random sampling is used to make the process reasonably fast even on very large tables. The number of values and histogram bins collected is now user-settable via an ALTER TABLE command. There is more still to do; the new stats are not being used everywhere they could be in the planner. But the remaining changes for this project should be localized, and the behavior is already better than before. A not-very-related change is that sorting now makes use of btree comparison routines if it can find one, rather than invoking '<' twice.

* Change scoping of table and join refnames to conform to SQL92: a JOINTom Lane2001-02-14
| | | | | | | | | clause with an alias is a <subquery> and therefore hides table references appearing within it, according to the spec. This is the same as the preliminary patch I posted to pgsql-patches yesterday, plus some really grotty code in ruleutils.c to reverse-list a query tree with the correct alias name depending on context. I'd rather not have done that, but unless we want to force another initdb for 7.1, there's no other way for now.
* Change Copyright from PostgreSQL, Inc to PostgreSQL Global Development Group.Bruce Momjian2001-01-24

* Make DROP TABLE rollback-able: postpone physical file delete until commit.Tom Lane2000-11-08
| | | | | | | | | (WAL logging for this is not done yet, however.) Clean up a number of really crufty things that are no longer needed now that DROP behaves nicely. Make temp table mapper do the right things when drop or rename affecting a temp table is rolled back. Also, remove "relation modified while in use" error check, in favor of locking tables at first reference and holding that lock throughout the statement.
* Subselects in FROM clause, per ISO syntax: FROM (SELECT ...) [AS] alias.Tom Lane2000-09-29
| | | | | | | | | (Don't forget that an alias is required.) Views reimplemented as expanding to subselect-in-FROM. Grouping, aggregates, DISTINCT in views actually work now (he says optimistically). No UNION support in subselects/views yet, but I have some ideas about that. Rule-related permissions checking moved out of rewriter and into executor. INITDB REQUIRED!
* Use variable aliases, if supplied, rather than real column names inTom Lane2000-09-25
| | | | | | | complaints about ungrouped variables. This is for consistency with behavior elsewhere, notably the fact that the relname is reported as an alias in these same complaints. Also, it'll work with subselect- in-FROM where old code didn't.
* First cut at full support for OUTER JOINs. There are still a few looseTom Lane2000-09-12
| | | | | ends to clean up (see my message of same date to pghackers), but mostly it works. INITDB REQUIRED!
* Remove 'func_tlist' from Func expression nodes, likewise 'param_tlist'Tom Lane2000-08-08
| | | | | | | | from Param nodes, per discussion a few days ago on pghackers. Add new expression node type FieldSelect that implements the functionality where it's actually needed. Clean up some other unused fields in Func nodes as well. NOTE: initdb forced due to change in stored expression trees for rules.
* Attached is a new patch which addresses this problem. (oids inBruce Momjian2000-07-02

* Fix handling of type tuple associated with a temp relation. We haveTom Lane2000-06-20
| | | | | | | | | to apply the tempname->realname mapping to type name lookup as well as relation name lookup, else the type tuple will not be found when wanted. This fixes bugs like this one: create temp table foo (f1 int); select foo.f2 from foo; ERROR: Unable to locate type name 'foo' in catalog
* Rename rule CURRENT to OLD in source tree. Add mapping for backwardBruce Momjian2000-06-12

* New warning code about auto-created range table entries.Bruce Momjian2000-06-03

* Remove no-longer-necessary restriction against uplevel correlation varsTom Lane2000-03-23
| | | | | outside WHERE clause. Fix a couple of places that didn't handle uplevel refs cleanly.
* Fix a bunch of minor portability problems and maybe-bugs revealed byTom Lane2000-03-17
| | | | | | running gcc and HP's cc with warnings cranked way up. Signed vs unsigned comparisons, routines declared static and then defined not-static, that kind of thing. Tedious, but perhaps useful...
* Implement column aliases on views "CREATE VIEW name (collist)".Thomas G. Lockhart2000-03-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Implement TIME WITH TIME ZONE type (timetz internal type). Remap length() for character strings to CHAR_LENGTH() for SQL92 and to remove the ambiguity with geometric length() functions. Keep length() for character strings for backward compatibility. Shrink stored views by removing internal column name list from visible rte. Implement min(), max() for time and timetz data types. Implement conversion of TIME to INTERVAL. Implement abs(), mod(), fac() for the int8 data type. Rename some math functions to generic names: round(), sqrt(), cbrt(), pow(), etc. Rename NUMERIC power() function to pow(). Fix int2 factorial to calculate result in int4. Enhance the Oracle compatibility function translate() to work with string arguments (from Edwin Ramirez). Modify pg_proc system table to remove OID holes.
* Trial implementation of ALTER DROP COLUMN.Hiroshi Inoue2000-03-09
| | | | | | They are #ifdef'd. Add -D_DROP_COLUMN_HACK__ compile option to evaluate it.
* Carry column aliases from the parser frontend. Enables queries likeThomas G. Lockhart2000-02-15
| | | | | | | SELECT a FROM t1 tx (a); Allow join syntax, including queries like SELECT * FROM t1 NATURAL JOIN t2; Update RTE structure to hold column aliases in an Attr structure.
* Add:Bruce Momjian2000-01-26
| | | | | | * Portions Copyright (c) 1996-2000, PostgreSQL, Inc to all files copyright Regents of Berkeley. Man, that's a lot of files.
* New NameStr macro to convert Name to Str. No need for var.data anymore.Bruce Momjian1999-11-07
| | | | | | Fewer calls to nameout. Better use of RelationGetRelationName.
* Fix planner and rewriter to follow SQL semantics for tables that areTom Lane1999-10-07
| | | | | | | | | | | mentioned in FROM but not elsewhere in the query: such tables should be joined over anyway. Aside from being more standards-compliant, this allows removal of some very ugly hacks for COUNT(*) processing. Also, allow HAVING clause without aggregate functions, since SQL does. Clean up CREATE RULE statement-list syntax the same way Bruce just fixed the main stmtmulti production. CAUTION: addition of a field to RangeTblEntry nodes breaks stored rules; you will have to initdb if you have any rules.

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | additional argument specifying the kind of lock to acquire/release (or 'NoLock' to do no lock processing). Ensure that all relations are locked with some appropriate lock level before being examined --- this ensures that relevant shared-inval messages have been processed and should prevent problems caused by concurrent VACUUM. Fix several bugs having to do with mismatched increment/decrement of relation ref count and mismatched heap_open/close (which amounts to the same thing). A bogus ref count on a relation doesn't matter much *unless* a SI Inval message happens to arrive at the wrong time, which is probably why we got away with this sloppiness for so long. Repair missing grab of AccessExclusiveLock in DROP TABLE, ALTER/RENAME TABLE, etc, as noted by Hiroshi. Recommend 'make clean all' after pulling this update; I modified the Relation struct layout slightly. Will post further discussion to pghackers list shortly.
* Rewrite parser's handling of INSERT ... SELECT so that processingTom Lane1999-07-19
| | | | | | | | | of the SELECT part of the statement is just like a plain SELECT. All INSERT-specific processing happens after the SELECT parsing is done. This eliminates many problems, e.g. INSERT ... SELECT ... GROUP BY using the wrong column labels. Ensure that DEFAULT clauses are coerced to the target column type, whether or not stored clause produces the right type. Substantial cleanup of parser's array support.

* heap_fetch requires buffer pointer, must be released; heap_getnextBruce Momjian1998-08-19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | no longer returns buffer pointer, can be gotten from scan; descriptor; bootstrap can create multi-key indexes; pg_procname index now is multi-key index; oidint2, oidint4, oidname are gone (must be removed from regression tests); use System Cache rather than sequential scan in many places; heap_modifytuple no longer takes buffer parameter; remove unused buffer parameter in a few other functions; oid8 is not index-able; remove some use of single-character variable names; cleanup Buffer variables usage and scan descriptor looping; cleaned up allocation and freeing of tuples; 18k lines of diff;

* Allow floating point constants for "def_arg" numeric arguments.Thomas G. Lockhart1998-07-08
