This patch labels them with the PG_VERSION string. There was some discussion about using semantic versioning conventions, but that doesn't seem terribly helpful for modules with no SQL-level presence; and for those that do have SQL objects, we typically expect them to support multiple revisions of the SQL definitions, so it'd still not be very helpful. I did not label any of src/test/modules/. It seems unnecessary since we don't install those, and besides there ought to be someplace that still provides test coverage for the original PG_MODULE_MAGIC macro. But it has been changed to call pg_regress directly and no longer require make. Only one such constraint is allowed for a column. We propagate these constraints to other tables during operations such as adding inheritance relationships, creating and attaching partitions and creating tables LIKE other tables. These related constraints mostly follow the well-known rules of conislocal and coninhcount that we have for CHECK constraints, with some adaptations: for example, as opposed to CHECK constraints, we don't match not-null ones by name when descending a hierarchy to alter or remove it, instead matching by the name of the column that they apply to. This means we don't require the constraint names to be identical across a hierarchy. The inheritance status of these constraints can be controlled: now we can be sure that if a parent table has one, then all children will have it as well. They can optionally be marked NO INHERIT, and then children are free not to have one. (There's currently no support for altering a NO INHERIT constraint into inheriting down the hierarchy, but that's a desirable future feature.) This also opens the door for having these constraints be marked NOT VALID, as well as allowing UNIQUE+NOT NULL to be used for functional dependency determination, as envisioned by commit e49ae8d3bc58. It's likely possible to allow DEFERRABLE constraints as followup work, as well. psql shows these constraints in \d+, though we may want to reconsider if this turns out to be too noisy. Earlier versions of this patch hid constraints that were on the same columns of the primary key, but I'm not sure that that's very useful. If clutter is a problem, we might be better off inventing a new \d++ command and not showing the constraints in \d+. For now, we omit these constraints on system catalog columns, because they're unlikely to achieve anything. The main difference to the previous attempt at this (b0e96f311985) is that we now require that such a constraint always exists when a primary key is in the column; we didn't require this previously which had a number of unpalatable consequences. With this requirement, the code is easier to reason about. For example: - We no longer have "throwaway constraints" during pg_dump. We needed those for the case where a table had a PK without a not-null underneath, to prevent a slow scan of the data during restore of the PK creation, which was particularly problematic for pg_upgrade. - We no longer have to cope with attnotnull being set spuriously in case a primary key is dropped indirectly (e.g., via DROP COLUMN). The pgindent part of this is pretty small, consisting mainly of fixing up self-inflicted formatting damage from patches that hadn't bothered to add their new typedefs to typedefs.list. In order to keep it from making anything worse, I manually added a dozen or so typedefs that appeared in the existing typedefs.list but not in the buildfarm's list. Perhaps we should formalize that, or better find a way to get those typedefs into the automatic list. pgperltidy is as opinionated as always, and reformat-dat-files too.

This means we don't require the constraint names to be identical across a hierarchy. For now, we omit them for system catalogs. Maybe this is worth reconsidering. We don't support NOT VALID nor DEFERRABLE clauses either; these can be added as separate features later (this patch is already large and complicated enough.) psql shows these constraints in \d+. pg_dump requires some ad-hoc hacks, particularly when dumping a primary key. We now create one "throwaway" not-null constraint for each column in the PK together with the CREATE TABLE command, and once the PK is created, all those throwaway constraints are removed. This avoids having to check each tuple for nullness when the dump restores the primary key creation. pg_upgrading from an older release requires a somewhat brittle procedure to create a constraint state that matches what would be created if the database were being created fresh in Postgres 17. I have tested all the scenarios I could think of, and it works correctly as far as I can tell, but I could have neglected weird cases. This patch has been very long in the making. The first patch was written by Bernd Helmle in 2010 to add a new pg_constraint.contype value ('n'), which I (Álvaro) then hijacked in 2011 and 2012, until that one was killed by the realization that we ought to use contype='c' instead: manufactured CHECK constraints. However, later SQL standard development, as well as nonobvious emergent properties of that design (mostly, failure to distinguish them from "normal" CHECK constraints as well as the performance implication of having to test the CHECK expression) led us to reconsider this choice, so now the current implementation uses contype='n' again. During Postgres 16 this had already been introduced by commit e056c557aef4, but there were some problems mainly with the pg_upgrade procedure that couldn't be fixed in reasonable time, so it was reverted. In 2016 Vitaly Burovoy also worked on this feature[1] but found no consensus for his proposed approach, which was claimed to be closer to the letter of the standard, requiring an additional pg_attribute column to track the OID of the not-null constraint for that column. Its habit of scribbling on the input bitmapset isn't great, plus for sufficiently large bitmapsets it would take O(N^2) time to complete a loop. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, information about the permissions to be checked on relations mentioned in a query is stored in their range table entries. So the executor must scan the entire range table looking for relations that need to have permissions checked. This can make the permission checking part of the executor initialization needlessly expensive when many inheritance children are present in the range range. While the permissions need not be checked on the individual child relations, the executor still must visit every range table entry to filter them out. This commit moves the permission checking information out of the range table entries into a new plan node called RTEPermissionInfo. Every top-level (inheritance "root") RTE_RELATION entry in the range table gets one and a list of those is maintained alongside the range table. This new list is initialized by the parser when initializing the range table. The rewriter can add more entries to it as rules/views are expanded. Finally, the planner combines the lists of the individual subqueries into one flat list that is passed to the executor for checking. To make it quick to find the RTEPermissionInfo entry belonging to a given relation, RangeTblEntry gets a new Index field 'perminfoindex' that stores the corresponding RTEPermissionInfo's index in the query's list of the latter. ExecutorCheckPerms_hook has gained another List * argument; the signature is now: typedef bool (*ExecutorCheckPerms_hook_type) (List *rangeTable, List *rtePermInfos, bool ereport_on_violation); The first argument is no longer used by any in-core uses of the hook, but we leave it in place because there may be other implementations that do. Implementations should likely scan the rtePermInfos list to determine which operations to allow or deny. This makes everything consistent with other places, backend_flush_after, bgwriter_flush_after, port, checkpoint_flush_after doing so already, for example. A cross build from linux targetting mingw goes from 994.11user 136.43system 0:31.58elapsed 3579%CPU to 422.41user 89.05system 0:14.35elapsed 3562%CPU The wins on windows are similar-ish (but I don't have a system at hand just now for actual numbers). Targetting other operating systems the wins are far smaller (tested linux, macOS, FreeBSD). For now precompiled headers are disabled by default, it's not clear how well they work on all platforms. E.g. on FreeBSD gcc doesn't seem to have working support, but clang does. When doing a full build precompiled headers are only beneficial for targets with multiple .c files, as meson builds a separate precompiled header for each target (so that different compilation options take effect). This commit therefore only changes target with at least two .c files to use precompiled headers. Because this commit adds b_pch=false to the default_options new build directories will have precompiled headers disabled by default, however existing build directories will continue use the default value of b_pch, which is true. Note that using precompiled headers with ccache requires setting CCACHE_SLOPPINESS=pch_defines,time_macros to get hits. Recursive make has a lot of hard to resolve dependency issues and slow incremental rebuilds. Our home-grown MSVC build system is hard to maintain for developers not using Windows and runs tests serially. While these and other issues could individually be addressed with incremental improvements, together they seem best addressed by moving to a more modern build system. After evaluating different build system choices, we chose to use meson, to a good degree based on the adoption by other open source projects. We decided that it's more realistic to commit a relatively early version of the new build system and mature it in tree. This commit adds an initial version of a meson based build system. It supports building postgres on at least AIX, FreeBSD, Linux, macOS, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris and Windows (however only gcc is supported on aix, solaris). For Windows/MSVC postgres can now be built with ninja (faster, particularly for incremental builds) and msbuild (supporting the visual studio GUI, but building slower). Several aspects (e.g. Windows rc file generation, PGXS compatibility, LLVM bitcode generation, documentation adjustments) are done in subsequent commits requiring further review. Other aspects (e.g. not installing test-only extensions) are not yet addressed. When building on Windows with msbuild, builds are slower when using a visual studio version older than 2019, because those versions do not support MultiToolTask, required by meson for intra-target parallelism. The plan is to remove the MSVC specific build system in src/tools/msvc soon after reaching feature parity. However, we're not planning to remove the autoconf/make build system in the near future. Likely we're going to keep at least the parts required for PGXS to keep working around until all supported versions build with meson. Whoever wrote quote_object_name took it on themselves to override that judgment, but the only way to do so is to cast away const someplace. We can avoid that and substantially shorten the function by going along with quote_identifier's opinion. AFAICS quote_object_name is not used in any way where this would be unsustainable. But that caused unstable behavior with parallel workers, because workers don't necessarily load extensions and GUCs in the same order their leader did. To make that work safely, we have to completely disallow the case. We now actually remove any such GUCs at the time of initial extension load, and then throw an error not just a warning if you try to add one later. While this might create a compatibility issue for a few people, the improvement in error-detection capability seems worth it; it's hard to believe that there's any good use-case for choosing such GUC names. This also un-reverts 5609cc01c (Rename EmitWarningsOnPlaceholders() to MarkGUCPrefixReserved()), since that function's old name is now even more of a misnomer. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the "simple Query" code path, it's fine for parse analysis or execution of a utility statement to scribble on the statement's node tree, since that'll just be thrown away afterwards. However it's not fine if the node tree is in the plan cache, as then it'd be corrupted for subsequent executions. Up to now we've dealt with that by having individual utility-statement functions apply copyObject() if they were going to modify the tree. But that's prone to errors of omission. Bug #17053 from Charles Samborski shows that CREATE/ALTER DOMAIN didn't get this memo, and can crash if executed repeatedly from plan cache. In the back branches, we'll just apply a narrow band-aid for that, but in HEAD it seems prudent to have a more principled fix that will close off the possibility of other similar bugs in future. Hence, let's hoist the responsibility for doing copyObject up into ProcessUtility from its children, thus ensuring that it happens for all utility statement types. Also, modify ProcessUtility's API so that its callers can tell it whether a copy step is necessary. It turns out that in all cases, the immediate caller knows whether the node tree is transient, so this doesn't involve a huge amount of code thrashing. In this way, while we lose a little bit in the execute-from-cache code path due to sometimes copying node trees that wouldn't be mutated anyway, we gain something in the simple-Query code path by not copying throwaway node trees. Statements that are complex enough to be expensive to copy are almost certainly ones that would have to be copied anyway, so the loss in the cache code path shouldn't be much. (Note that this whole problem applies only to utility statements. Optimizable statements don't have the issue because we long ago made the executor treat Plan trees as read-only. Perhaps someday we will make utility statement execution act likewise, but I'm not holding my breath.)
