Noted while experimenting with EXPLAIN VERBOSE, which has also got some issues in this area. Backpatch to 8.3, where arrays of composites were introduced.

Sometimes the input tuple will be formed from a select targetlist in which dropped columns are filled with a NULL of an arbitrary type (the planner typically uses INT4, since it can't tell what type the dropped column really was). So we need to relax the rowtype compatibility check to not insist on physical compatibility if the actual column value is NULL. In principle we might need to do this for functions returning composite types, too (see tupledesc_match()). In practice there doesn't seem to be a bug there, probably because the function will be using the same cached rowtype descriptor as the caller. Fixing that code path would require significant rearrangement, so I left it alone for now. Per complaint from Filip Rembialkowski.

However, when inlining a SRF we allow sorting, grouping, and set-ops such as UNION. In these cases, modifying one of the targetlist entries that the sort/group/setop depends on could conceivably change the behavior of the function's statement --- so don't inline when such a case applies.

Although there's a lot left to be done in plpgsql, this already cures the "if (TG_OP = 'INSERT' and NEW.foo ...)" problem, as illustrated by the changed regression test.

We now identify the "current" row for every joined relation in UPDATE, DELETE, and SELECT FOR UPDATE/SHARE queries. If an EvalPlanQual recheck is necessary, we jam the appropriate row into each scan node in the rechecking plan, forcing it to emit only that one row. The former behavior could rescan the whole of each joined relation for each recheck, which was terrible for performance, and what's much worse could result in duplicated output tuples. Also, the original implementation of EvalPlanQual could not re-use the recheck execution tree --- it had to go through a full executor init and shutdown for every row to be tested. To avoid this overhead, I've associated a special runtime Param with each LockRows or ModifyTable plan node, and arranged to make every scan node below such a node depend on that Param. Thus, by signaling a change in that Param, the EPQ machinery can just rescan the already-built test plan. This patch also adds a prohibition on set-returning functions in the targetlist of SELECT FOR UPDATE/SHARE. This is needed to avoid the duplicate-output-tuple problem. It seems fairly reasonable since the other restrictions on SELECT FOR UPDATE are meant to ensure that there is a unique correspondence between source tuples and result tuples, which an output SRF destroys as much as anything else does.

I believe this fixes the last case within CVS HEAD in which an EXISTS could give worse performance than an equivalent IN subquery. The tricky part of this is that if the upper query probes the EXISTS for only a few rows, the hashing implementation can actually be worse than the default, and therefore we need to make a cost-based decision about which way to use. But at the time when the planner generates plans for subqueries, it doesn't really know how many times the subquery will be executed. The least invasive solution seems to be to generate both plans and postpone the choice until execution. Therefore, in a query that has been optimized this way, EXPLAIN will show two subplans for the EXISTS, of which only one will actually get executed. There is a lot more that could be done based on this infrastructure: in particular it's interesting to consider switching to the hash plan if we start out using the non-hashed plan but find a lot more upper rows going by than we expected. I have therefore left some minor inefficiencies in place, such as initializing both subplans even though we will currently only use one.

Most of the places that need to make such conversions now require just one function or macro call, in place of the multiple notational layers that used to be needed. There are no longer any direct calls of textout or textin, and we got most of the places that were using handmade conversions via memcpy (there may be a few still lurking, though). This commit doesn't make any serious effort to eliminate transient memory leaks caused by detoasting toasted text objects before they reach text_to_cstring. The basic fix is that nodeTidscan.c has to apply heap_get_latest_tid() to the current-scan-TID obtained from the cursor query; this ensures we get the latest row version to work with. However, since that only works if the query plan is a TID scan, we also have to hack the planner to make sure only that type of plan will be selected. (Formerly, the planner might decide to apply a seqscan if the table is very small. This change is probably a Good Thing anyway, since it's hard to see how a seqscan could really win.) That means the execQual.c code to support CurrentOfExpr as a regular expression type is dead code, so replace it with just an elog(). Also, add regression tests covering these cases. Note that the added tests expose the fact that re-fetching an updated row misbehaves if the cursor used FOR UPDATE. That's an independent bug that should be fixed later. These new casts are assignment-only in the to-string direction, explicit-only in the other, and therefore should create no surprising behavior. Remove a bunch of thereby-obsoleted datatype-specific casting functions. The "general mechanism" is a new expression node type CoerceViaIO that can actually convert between *any* two datatypes if their external text representations are compatible. This is more general than needed for the immediate feature, but might be useful in plpgsql or other places in future. This commit does nothing about the issue that applying the concatenation operator || to non-text types will now fail, often with strange error messages due to misinterpreting the operator as array concatenation.
