* Initialize or set a couple of variables to suppress compiler warnings.Thomas G. Lockhart2002-04-21
| | | | | | These were for cases protected by elog(ERROR) exits, but may as well keep the compiler happy. Not sure why they don't show up on my gcc-2.96.x version of the compiler.
* Allow more choices for style of value in various SET commands. Formerly,Thomas G. Lockhart2002-04-21
| | | | | | | | | | | most required a stringy syntax in the parser; now integers and floats can (or should) be handled. There is at least one cheesy error message mentioning sending mail to me if there are problems; should be changed prior to release. Allow lists of values from the parser in more cases. If multiple arguments were not allowed previously, they probably are not allowed now, but at least the data structures being passed around are more consistant across more cases.
* pg_type has a typnamespace column; system now supports creating typesTom Lane2002-03-29
| | | | | | in different namespaces. Also, cleanup work on relation namespace support: drop, alter, rename commands work for tables in non-default namespaces.
* Change made to elog:Bruce Momjian2002-03-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | o Change all current CVS messages of NOTICE to WARNING. We were going to do this just before 7.3 beta but it has to be done now, as you will see below. o Change current INFO messages that should be controlled by client_min_messages to NOTICE. o Force remaining INFO messages, like from EXPLAIN, VACUUM VERBOSE, etc. to always go to the client. o Remove INFO from the client_min_messages options and add NOTICE. Seems we do need three non-ERROR elog levels to handle the various behaviors we need for these messages. Regression passed.

* Accept an INTERVAL argument for SET TIME ZONE per SQL99.Thomas G. Lockhart2001-10-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Modified the parser and the SET handlers to use full Node structures rather than simply a character string argument. Implement INTERVAL() YEAR TO MONTH (etc) syntax per SQL99. Does not yet accept the goofy string format that goes along with, but this should be fairly straight forward to fix now as a bug or later as a feature. Implement precision for the INTERVAL() type. Use the typmod mechanism for both of INTERVAL features. Fix the INTERVAL syntax in the parser: opt_interval was in the wrong place. INTERVAL is now a reserved word, otherwise we get reduce/reduce errors. Implement an explicit date_part() function for TIMETZ. Should fix coersion problem with INTERVAL reported by Peter E. Fix up some error messages for date/time types. Use all caps for type names within message. Fix recently introduced side-effect bug disabling 'epoch' as a recognized field for date_part() etc. Reported by Peter E. (??) Bump catalog version number. Rename "microseconds" current transaction time field from ...Msec to ...Usec. Duh! date/time regression tests updated for reference platform, but a few changes will be necessary for others.

I found new bug in command/variable.c in parse_client_encoding(), nobody probably never see this error: if (pg_set_client_encoding(encoding)) { elog(ERROR, "Conversion between %s and %s is not supported", value, GetDatabaseEncodingName()); } because pg_set_client_encoding() returns -1 for error and 0 as true. It's fixed too. IMHO it can be apply. * Extend GUC concepts of parse_hook and assign_hook to all four supportedTom Lane2001-06-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | datatypes, not only strings. parse_hook is useless for bool, I suppose, but it seems possibly useful for int and double to apply variable-specific constraints that are more complex than simple range limits. assign_hook is definitely useful for all datatypes --- we need it right now for bool to support date cache reset when changing Australian timezone rule setting. Also, clean up some residual problems with the reset all/show all patch, including memory leaks and mistaken reset of PostPortNumber. It seems best that RESET ALL not touch variables that don't have SUSET or USERSET context.

* Support SET/SHOW/RESET client_encoding and server_encoding even whenTom Lane2000-10-25
| | | | | | MULTIBYTE support is not compiled (you just can't set them to anything but SQL_ASCII). This should reduce interoperability problems between MB-enabled clients and non-MB-enabled servers.

* Convert all remaining float4 and float8 functions to new fmgr style.Tom Lane2000-08-01
| | | | | | At this point I think it'd be possible to make float4 be pass-by-value without too much work --- and float8 too on machines where Datum is 8 bytes. Something to try when the mood strikes, anyway.

* Second pass over run-time configuration system. Adjust priorities on somePeter Eisentraut2000-06-22
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | option settings. Sort out SIGHUP vs BACKEND -- there is no total ordering here, so make explicit checks. Add comments explaining all of this. Removed permissions check on SHOW command. Add examine_subclass to the game, rename to SQL_inheritance to fit the official data model better. Adjust documentation. Standalone backend needs to reset all options before it starts. To facilitate that, have IsUnderPostmaster be set by the postmaster itself, don't wait for the magic -p switch. Also make sure that all environment variables and argv's survive init_ps_display(). Use strdup where necessary. Have initdb make configuration files (postgresql.conf, pg_hba.conf) mode 0600 -- having configuration files is no fun if you can't edit them.

| | | | | | | | | | | we'll get there one day. Use `cat' to create aclocal.m4, not `aclocal'. Some people don't have automake installed. Only run the autoconf rule in the top-level GNUmakefile if the invoker specified `make configure', don't run it automatically because of CVS timestamp skew.

* The heralded `Grand Unified Configuration scheme' (GUC)Peter Eisentraut2000-05-31
| | | | | | | | | | | | | That means you can now set your options in either or all of $PGDATA/configuration, some postmaster option (--enable-fsync=off), or set a SET command. The list of options is in backend/utils/misc/guc.c, documentation will be written post haste. pg_options is gone, so is that pq_geqo config file. Also removed were backend -K, -Q, and -T options (no longer applicable, although -d0 does the same as -Q). Added to configure an --enable-syslog option. changed all callers from TPRINTF to elog(DEBUG)

* Add transcendental math functions (sine, cosine, etc)Thomas G. Lockhart2000-04-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add a random number generator and seed setter (random(), SET SEED) Fix up the interval*float8 math to carry partial months into the time field. Add float8*interval so we have symmetry in the available math. Fix the parser and define.c to accept SQL92 types as field arguments. Fix the parser to accept SQL92 types for CREATE TYPE, etc. This is necessary to allow... Bit/varbit support in contrib/bit cleaned up to compile and load cleanly. Still needs some work before final release. Implement the "SOME" keyword as a synonym for "ANY" per SQL92. Implement ascii(text), ichar(int4), repeat(text,int4) to help support the ODBC driver. Enable the TRUNCATE() function mapping in the ODBC driver.

* Get rid of postgres.c's separate parsing logic for PGDATESTYLE env.Tom Lane2000-02-19
| | | | | | | | | variable, instead calling same code in variable.c that is used to parse SET DATESTYLE. Fix bug: although backend's startup datestyle had been changed to ISO, 'RESET DATESTYLE' and 'SET DATESTYLE TO DEFAULT' didn't know about it. For consistency I have made the latter two reset to the PGDATESTYLE-defined initial value, which may not be the same as the compiled-in default of ISO.
* New cost model for planning, incorporating a penalty for random pageTom Lane2000-02-15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | accesses versus sequential accesses, a (very crude) estimate of the effects of caching on random page accesses, and cost to evaluate WHERE- clause expressions. Export critical parameters for this model as SET variables. Also, create SET variables for the planner's enable flags (enable_seqscan, enable_indexscan, etc) so that these can be controlled more conveniently than via PGOPTIONS. Planner now estimates both startup cost (cost before retrieving first tuple) and total cost of each path, so it can optimize queries with LIMIT on a reasonable basis by interpolating between these costs. Same facility is a win for EXISTS(...) subqueries and some other cases. Redesign pathkey representation to achieve a major speedup in planning (I saw as much as 5X on a 10-way join); also minor changes in planner to reduce memory consumption by recycling discarded Path nodes and not constructing unnecessary lists. Minor cleanups to display more-plausible costs in some cases in EXPLAIN output. Initdb forced by change in interface to index cost estimation functions.
* Revise handling of index-type-specific indexscan cost estimation, perTom Lane2000-01-22
