In applications where there are lots of short read-only transactions, this should improve performance noticeably; not so much from removal of the actual XID-assignments, as from reduction of overhead that's driven by the rate of XID consumption. We add a concept of a "virtual transaction ID" so that active transactions can be uniquely identified even if they don't have a regular XID. This is a much lighter-weight concept: uniqueness of VXIDs is only guaranteed over the short term, and no on-disk record is made about them. Florian Pflug, with some editorialization by Tom.

Unfortunately, in conversational English, their use is often mixed, as in, "You may use this variable to do X", when in fact, "can" is a better choice. Similarly, "It may crash" is better stated, "It might crash".

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | by abandoning the idea that it should say SERIAL in the dump. Instead, dump serial sequences and column defaults just like regular ones. Add a new backend command ALTER SEQUENCE OWNED BY to let pg_dump recreate the sequence-to-column dependency that was formerly created "behind the scenes" by SERIAL. This restores SERIAL to being truly "just a macro" consisting of component operations that can be stated explicitly in SQL. Furthermore, the new command allows sequence ownership to be reassigned, so that old mistakes can be cleaned up. Also, downgrade the OWNED-BY dependency from INTERNAL to AUTO, since there is no longer any very compelling argument why the sequence couldn't be dropped while keeping the column. (This forces initdb, to be sure the right kinds of dependencies are in there.) Along the way, add checks to prevent ALTER OWNER or SET SCHEMA on an owned sequence; you can now only do this indirectly by changing the owning table's owner or schema. This is an oversight in previous releases, but probably not worth back-patching.

Some stylistic cleanup too, and pay attention to keeping comments in sync with code. Documentation still needs work, though I did fix the omissions in catalogs.sgml and indexam.sgml.

We also require that they do so before calling XLogInsert; this takes care of the synchronization requirement documented in SyncOneBuffer. Note that because bufmgr takes the buffer content lock (in shared mode) while writing out any buffer, it doesn't matter whether MarkBufferDirty is executed before the buffer content change is complete, so long as the content change is completed before releasing exclusive lock on the buffer. So it's OK to set the dirtybit before we fill in the LSN. This eliminates the former kluge of needing to set the dirtybit in LockBuffer. Aside from making the code more transparent, we can also add some new debugging assertions, in particular that the caller of MarkBufferDirty must hold the buffer content lock, not merely a pin.

The frontend conversion of text string to pg_class OID is now encapsulated as an implicitly-invocable coercion from text to regclass. This provides backwards compatibility to the old behavior when the sequence argument is explicitly typed as 'text'. When the argument is just an unadorned literal string, it will be taken as 'regclass', which means that the stored representation will be an OID. This solves longstanding problems with renaming sequences that are referenced in default expressions, as well as new-in-8.1 problems with renaming such sequences' schemas or moving them to another schema. All per recent discussion. Along the way, fix some rather serious problems in dbmirror's support for mirroring sequence operations (int4 vs int8 confusion for instance).

Invent SubTransactionIds that are managed like CommandIds (ie, counter is reset at start of each top transaction), and use these instead of TransactionIds to keep track of subtransaction status in those modules that need it. This means that a subtransaction does not need an XID unless it actually inserts/modifies rows in the database. Accordingly, don't assign it an XID nor take a lock on the XID until it tries to do that. This saves a lot of overhead for subtransactions that are only used for error recovery (eg plpgsql exceptions). Also, arrange to release a subtransaction's XID lock as soon as the subtransaction exits, in both the commit and abort cases. This avoids holding many unique locks after a long series of subtransactions. The price is some additional overhead in XactLockTableWait, but that seems acceptable. Finally, restructure the state machine in xact.c to have a more orthogonal set of states for subtransactions.
